At the 2014 Milan Design Week back in April, Japanese watch brand CITIZEN and French architecture firm DGT presented LIGHT is TIME, an immersive indoor art installation in which 80,000 shimmering watch parts were suspended from a ceiling. During the installation, visitors could walk amongst the gold-hued watch main plates (the base plate on which a watch’s parts are mounted.) A somewhat scaled-down version of the installation, with 65,000 parts, was displayed at the SPIRAL cultural center in Tokyo back in November.

Letteralmente il termine “design” indica la progettazione di un oggetto che si propone di sintetizzare funzionalità ed estetica. Esercizi di stile su questo tema sono dunque andati in scena la scorsa settimana a Milano in occasione del Salone del Mobile. Un appuntamento sempre più accattivante non solo per l’arredamento — anima della kermesse — ma anche per altre realtà. Non sorprende dunque che Citizen abbia scelto questa esposizione per far conoscere, tramite un’installazione in Triennale curata dagli architetti DGT il suo obiettivo, ovvero quello di “creare il futuro degli orologi”.

Tecnologia che, per la giuria del Milano Design Award, è la vera protagonista del Fuorisalone, tanto da vincere varie medaglie. In due casi, in coppia con un altro concetto su cui molti invitano a riflettere: il tempo. Uno è Light is Time, il progetto di Citizen a cui sono andati due premi: il Best Entertaining (a chi ha saputo meglio intrattenere il pubblico) e il Best Sound (per l'utilizzo del suono). Una suggestiva installazione, con 80mila platine sospese nell'aria con 4.200 fili e illuminate in una stanza buia, creata per raccontare il rapporto tra tempo e luce ma anche la storia del brand di orologi che nel 1976 ha inventato la tecnologia EcoDrive, che usa l'energia elettrica convertita da qualsiasi fonte di luce per far funzionare l'orologio senza pile.«La luce del sole è la misura terrestre dello scorrere del tempo», spiega l'architetto Tsuyoshi Tane, dello studio francese DGT, mente del progetto con il team Citizen, «da qui siamo partiti per arrivare al concetto alla base dell'installazione.
